Abortion

Terminating a pregnancy is perhaps one of the hardest decisions a woman ever has to make. In 2003 there were 181,600 legal abortions in the UK and over 1 million in the United States alone.

Abortion law varies from country to country. It is legal in the UK and USA, but illegal in some other parts of the world such as in the Republic of Ireland - a country that has one of the strictest anti-abortion laws in Europe. To qualify for a legal abortion in the UK and USA the unborn foetus must be no more than 24 weeks old, as calculated from the first day of the woman's last period.

Additionally, two doctors must agree that an abortion is necessary on medical grounds. Conditions deemed acceptable include: -

•  a risk to the mother's life if pregnancy continues

•  a risk to the mother's mental and / or physical health if pregnancy continues

•  a high risk that if pregnancy continues the child will be born handicapped

•  a risk that the physical and / or mental health of a mother's existing children should suffer if pregnancy continues
