Acne

Acne is a blocking and subsequent infection of the skin's pores or follicles. It is estimated that 75% of all teenagers and young adults suffer from acne. Although not as common, acne can also affect people in their 30s and 40s.

Contrary to popular belief, acne is not caused or accelerated by the consumption of too much fatty foods or chocolate. Instead, acne is actually caused by an over-activity of the sebaceous glands around the pores. The sebaceous glands secrete an oily substance called sebum, which normally drains over the skin's surface. Where sebum becomes blocked, bacteria forms creating whiteheads (spots) and blackheads. Acne generally occurs across the face, back, chest and shoulders where there are high numbers of these oil-producing sebaceous glands.

There are many different treatments for acne available on the market. If you go and see your GP they will often prescribe treatment for mild to moderate acne with a preparation containing benzoyl peroxide. There are several non-prescription based acne treatments available too, but they should be used with caution as some can block the pores, contributing further to acne.
