Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol abuse, or alcohol dependency as it is sometimes known, is an addiction where sufferers are unable to control their need for alcohol. Symptoms include uncontrolled cravings for drink, physical or emotional side-effects when without drink for any length of time, and a high tolerance to the effects of alcohol leading to heavy consumption.

Over one million people in the UK have problems with alcohol abuse at some point during their lives. Teenagers right through to elderly people have suffered, but it is the 25-year - 45-year old age bracket that sees the highest incidences of alcohol abuse in both sexes.

Common causes of alcohol abuse include stress, low self esteem, home-life pressures, work pressures and social pressures from peers. Alcohol abuse also induces stresses of its own, making it harder to cope and plunging victims into a vicious circle from which it becomes difficult to leave.

Alcohol abuse invariably leads to health problems. Liver damage, brain damage, permanent loss of memory, blackouts, stomach ulcers and bone damage are all related to alcohol abuse. Incidents of serious injury and death are also heightened under the influence of alcohol. It was recently reported that 65% of suicides in the UK are alcohol-related.

Admitting you have an alcohol problem is the first step to overcoming alcohol abuse. You should then seek professional advice from an alcohol abuse counsellor. For more information on alcohol abuse please review the resources on our web site.
