Bad Breath - Halitosis - Oral Health
Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a problem many people suffer from. It originates from the metabolism of micro-bacteria in the mouth and affects friendships, relationships and even marriages every day!
Our mouths are home to a vast array of different bacteria, all of which feed on the various residues deposited by the food and drink we consume. The bacteria becomes particularly active when they find protein in our mouths, and when they set to work on it, the bacteria produce a foul platter of smells as a by-product of their metabolism. Hydrogen sulphide, which smells like rotten eggs; cadaverine, which is associated with rotting corpses; and putrescine which is found in decayed meat are just some of the vile compounds that make up bad breath.
Fortunately, there are many different products available to help manage bad breath. Mouthwashes, oral rinses, toothpastes, gels, sprays and even gum can banish the problem, however with so many different bacteria in your mouth you must be sure to match the product with the bacteria. You don't want to be using a mouthwash that controls hydrogen-sulphur compounds, when your real problem is a different compound that gives off some other putrid smell
