Blood Test
A blood test is a very important diagnostic tool that medical professionals use to help identify illness or to tie symptoms to a specific type of complaint. It involves sampling the blood from a prominent vein and running several different diagnostic tests on the blood sample.
Blood is made of two components - plasma and cells. Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood that carries cells around the body as well as dissolved salts and minerals that are essential to our health. Cells in the blood are present in three different forms - red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen to different parts of our body and remove waste. White blood cells fight germs and infection. Platelets clot blood and stop bleeding.
A blood test will determine if blood cells, plasma and dissolved salts are present in your body in the right amounts and in the right proportion to each other. Diagnosis of illness and disease can be inferred from irregularities in both the plasma and the cells. For instance, red blood cells low in haemoglobin, which is the main component of red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen, indicates that a person is suffering from anaemia.
