Condoms
Condoms are a widely used contraception method and absolutely essential in preserving your sexual health if you practice promiscuous sex. They are one of the top ways in which to have sex safely and prevent yourself falling victim to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Condoms are available in two types of material - polyurethane and latex. Latex condoms are generally more reliable than those made from polyurethane, although neither are by no means infallible. Latex condoms have between a 2%-6% failure rate, while polyurethane condoms have a higher breakage rate. Because of this there is still a risk, albeit a very small risk, that pregnancy and transmission of STDs will occur, even if you use a condom correctly, and do everything right.
When compared to having unprotected sex, transmission of AIDS is greatly reduced through the use of a condom too. However, just as with the risk of pregnancy and other STDs, there is still a small risk that AIDS could be contracted from an HIV positive partner even if you use a condom correctly. One recent study estimated that as many as 17% of uninfected spouses became infected with the AIDS virus from their partner, even though they used condoms correctly 100% of the time.
