DNA Test
DNA (DeoxyriboNucleic Acid) is a long thread-like molecule present in most of the billions of cells in our body. It contains a mix of biochemicals and genes in a double-helix structure, similar in shape to a twisted ladder. DNA represents our genetic code; it defines everything that is unique about us, everything that we have in common with our natural family-line and everything that makes us human.
Because elements of our DNA match with those of our family, DNA testing has become the best scientific method by which to determine family linkage. A child can be linked to their natural father and other family relationships proven by DNA testing.
The DNA testing process itself is very simple. A mouth swab is usually taken from one or both of the people to be tested. The swab captures cells, many of which will contain the DNA molecule. The swab(s) are then sent to a DNA testing laboratory for examination. If there are swabs from different people, such as a father and a child, then they will be sealed separately so as to avoid pre-lab contamination.
At the lab the DNA is analysed to see if the two samples match. A test report is raised and normally sent to your GP within 5-10 days. Some labs offer self-test kits that allow you to take a swab yourself and send it directly to the lab, without the need to see your GP.
