Department Of Health - Goverment Department - Health Department
The Department of Health is a government department that oversees health policy development and implementation of policy across the country. It is responsible for setting standards and driving modernisation through the NHS as well as areas of social care and public health matters.
On the NHS, the Department of Health manages allocation of government funds and third-party resources to meet its NHS improvement plan. The improvement plan is focused on increasing capacity in the NHS so more people can be dealt with in a shorter timeframe. It also focuses on modernisation of procedures, equipment and the implementation of the latest research so more lives can be saved with better efficiency.
Driving down disease and death rates is another big aim for the NHS. Through government-funded public awareness schemes, better treatment and increased access to treatment on the NHS has succeeded in reducing cancer death rates by 10% since 1997 and also decreased death rates from cardiovascular disease by 23% over the same period.
On public health matters, the Department of Health manages awareness campaigns on such matters as SARS and reducing deaths resulting from extreme hot and cold weather types.
