Drug Rehab

Drug rehabilitation can be described as a comprehensive program to reduce / overcome drug addiction, and to assist the individual to attain the optimal level of mental and physical ability following drug addiction.

Getting help for someone with a drug dependency problem is critical as drug dependency can be devastating. It can destroy relationships, homes, careers and lives .

Drug addiction is a disease that progresses through predictable stages and as such it takes trained health professionals, often a doctor specialising in addiction medicine, to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the most appropriate treatment.

Drug addiction tends to be chronic and addicts usually relapse many times during recovery. As such an addict will require a great deal of support and help to quit the substance or activity that is causing the harm and this is the role of a drug rehabilitation centre.

Drug rehabilitation is a program of therapy to help an individual overcome drug addiction and to assist them in reaching a state of optimum health once the addiction has been defeated. Whilst there are many common elements to all drug rehabilitation programs, each one is designed around the needs of the individual and varies with the type of drug being abused.

Drug rehabilitation programs can be accessed through your GP or directly through a private drug rehab clinic. As with any addiction, the first step towards recovery is to admit that there is a problem, and that the drug or substance being taken has control over you.

Drug rehabilitation normally involves a detoxification program to help re-balance your system and dull the cravings for the drug being abused. Medication to help manage withdrawal is also available along with extensive and intensive psychological, emotional and physical support to help prevent relapses.

But, overcoming drug addiction is a difficult road. Relapses are common and drug rehabilitation programs recognise this. Specific help is normally on hand to coach people who have suffered a relapse and to give them a helping hand that puts them back on the road to full recovery.
