Eating Disorders - Anorexia - Bulimia
Eating disorders afflict men, women, boys and girls of all ages and from all backgrounds. Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating are the three most common disorders, all of which are associated with eating too little or too much as a way of coping with emotional distress or a problem.
Anorexia Nervosa is characterised by an intense fear of being overweight. People who suffer from Anorexia Nervosa are often obsessed with dieting, exercise excessively, skip more than one meal a day and lie to their parents or partner about it, and wear oversized and baggy clothes to disguise their true shape. They also often have a distorted perception of healthy weight and size proportions.
People who suffer from the Bulimia Nervosa eating disorder are characterised by feelings of guilt, depression, shame or a sense of being 'out of control', leading them to secretly eat large quantities of food to the point that they vomit. The stress of this situation also tells on other parts of the body. Bulimia sufferers complain of mouth infections, sore throat and glands, and stomach pains.
People who Binge Eat do so out of feelings of depression or other emotional distress. They too eat large quantities of food, but instead of vomiting they gain weight.
