Looking after yourself in later life or caring for an infirm relative or friend requires careful planning. Awareness of what care options are available, how much it will cost and how it can be paid for are some of the essential facts that will be needed in order to make an informed decision.

In the UK residential homes are a popular choice. The accommodation is professionally run, meals are provided and personal care such as help with dressing and bathing is readily available. They go beyond they type of care that an in-house carer can provide, but do not provide nursing care for medical conditions.

If nursing care is required then a nursing home would be an ideal option. This type of home has all the benefits of a residential care home, but it also has qualified nurses on hand to assist with medical care. Nursing care is often more costly than residential care because of the additional cost of employing nurses.

The UK government offers some assistance towards meeting the cost of elderly care in the UK. If a nursing home is selected then more help is available through the NHS. However, if the government believes that you have sufficient assets to fund elderly care then their contribution will be minimal.
