Excessive Sweating - Sweating - Hyperhidrosis

All people sweat, it is the body's preferred mechanism for maintaining a stable internal body temperature in warm or hot conditions. But, while most people only sweat a small or moderate amount, some people sweat excessively, even when the ambient temperature is not that warm.

Excessive sweating, otherwise known as hyperhidrosis, is a condition caused by overactive sweat glands. It may occur of its own accord or it can be a side effect of another illness. Typically, hyperhidrosis affects one or more areas from the face, armpits, hands, groin and feet.

Sufferers generally have to endure embarrassing situations, especially if their face, armpits or hands are affected. Facial sweating is often accompanied by extreme blushing making the problem even worse.

Fortunately, there are treatments available on the market to help control excessive sweating. Most work by limiting one or more of the elements responsible for the creation of sweat. Injections of Botulinum Toxin are a popular choice. The toxin blocks nerve impulses that connect to the sweat glands, preventing sweat formation. A surgical option is even available called Endoscopic Transthoracic Sympathectomy. In this operation the sympathetic nerves in the affecting region are severed, preventing the nerve endings from stimulating sweat glands to produce sweat.
