health food

'You are what you eat'. It's a common phrase that does in fact have a lot of truth to it. People who eat healthily feel and look healthy, while those who eat a lot fast food and saturated fats are often overweight and unfit.

Healthy eating is important. Too much saturated fat increases the presence of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol in the blood. LDLs are clumpy substances that tend to stick to artery walls and solidify, forming hard deposits that clog up our arteries. This makes it increasingly difficult for oxygen in our blood to reach all of our vital organs, heightening the risk of heart disease and other health conditions.

But what foods constitute health food? Basically, all foods that contribute to providing us with the nutrition that we need in a balanced diet that is low in saturated fats. Fibre-rich foods like brown pasta, brown bread and whole grain cereals are good for us. Foods that are rich in all of the primary vitamins and minerals, as well as those that provide us with protein and energy are important too.

Foods that supply us with a good source of antioxidants to help cleanse our system may also be classified as health foods, along with organic produce that has been grown without the aid of chemical fertilisers, insecticides or fungicides.
