Heart Rate Monitor - Heart Monitor

A heart rate monitor is an extremely useful device that is used to assess the strength of your heart. It is commonly used by athletes and people who work out to help them monitor the efficiency of their heart in pumping blood to the muscles.

Modern heart rate monitors work by reading your heart's electrocardiogram (ECG) - the electric signal given out on each heart beat. The reading is then normally displayed on a LCD screen clipped to your clothing or attached to a wristband.

When first using a heart rate monitor you should make a note of the reading during work out. As you aerobically train over the weeks and months, you will notice a gradual decline in your heart rate, even though you are working out just as hard if not harder. This is what all athletes look for and is a sure sign that your training is strengthening your heart.

The mechanics behind it are quite simple. The more you train then the better your heart becomes at pumping larger quantities of blood through your arteries. Blood flow per beat is increased and eventually your heart will be able to pump the volume of blood that you need when working out around in fewer beats, thus lowering your heart rate on the heart rate monitor.
