High Blood Pressure - Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is detrimental to our overall health. It increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke and can lead to failure of other vital organs in the body. It is estimated that one in every six of us suffers from high blood pressure - many of us without knowing it until we visit a doctor!

Blood pressure is essential to life. Our heart pumps blood around our system to feed our organs and keeps them healthy. The arteries and blood vessels through which pumped blood travels creates resistance, and so sets up pressure against the heart.

High blood pressure results when the heart has to beat faster than normal just to sustain a healthy flow of blood to the organs. The threshold at which blood pressure is said to be high is when a blood pressure reading has an amount over 100, so 160 over 100 (160/100) when the body is at rest.

The causes of high blood pressure are varied. In many cases it is hereditary, so runs in the family. Consumption of foods rich in saturated fats, large amounts of alcohol and smoking also contribute to high blood pressure. In the case of saturated fats, a high LDL cholesterol level results. LDL cholesterol is a porridge-like substance that sticks to the arteries, restricting blood flow. The more restricted blood flow becomes then the higher the blood pressure.
