Hospitals

In the UK hospitals are broadly divided into two types - NHS Trusts and Private Hospitals. Both types offer a range of services, with some specialising in particular health conditions. Not all hospitals have Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments.

NHS Trust hospitals are managed by the NHS. The Trusts oversee financial and management matters in their hospitals, ensuring that they are run efficiently and that resources and funds are competently allocated. Trusts also develop the strategy of their hospital and identify ways in which services can be improved.

NHS Trust hospitals provide a range of general healthcare facilities to the public. Some NHS Trusts offer specialist care facilities, whilst others concentrate on training healthcare professionals. Most NHS Trusts also offer a wide range of community services.

Private hospitals are often more highly specialised than NHS Trusts. Many offer healthcare services for specific health issues, like conditions related to the eyes or heart. Several UK private hospitals are centres of European and World excellence in their specialist areas. Private hospitals charge for their services, but offer a more personalised level of care than do the government-funded NHS hospitals.
