Hyperhidrosis - Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. It is a problem that many people suffer from even when the ambient temperature is not that warm, and can lead to severe embarrassment for those who suffer from the condition.

Hyperhidrosis is caused by over activity of the sweat glands in the skin, although on occasion it can be a by-product of another illness. The condition generally affects one or several areas of the body, these most commonly being the face, armpits, groin and feet.

For many, hyperhidrosis of the face and armpits are the most awkward to deal with. In the face hyperhidrosis can make the face wet with sweat to the point that it drips. It is also accompanied by reddening or blushing in the face, adding to the humiliation of the situation.

When the armpits are affected by hyperhidrosis, sufferers become very self-conscious in social situations. Even applying the strongest deodorant available does not stop sweat from developing around the armpits and soaking clothing.

Fortunately, there are treatments available to help control hyperhidrosis. Most work by limiting one or more of the elements responsible for the creation of sweat. Injections of Botulinum Toxin are a popular choice. The toxin blocks nerve impulses that connect to the sweat glands, preventing sweat formation. A surgical option is even available called Endoscopic Transthoracic Sympathectomy. In this operation the sympathetic nerves in the affecting region are severed, preventing the nerve endings from stimulating sweat glands to produce sweat.
