Infertility

Conception can be a difficult thing! A woman's egg and a man's sperm need exactly the right conditions in which to get together. It can often take a year or more of frequent unprotected sex for a woman to become pregnant, even if the couple do everything right. However, infertility - a 'mechanical' problem with either of the couple's reproductive systems - is always a fear for couples who have been trying to conceive for a long time without any success.

Infertility can be a problem for either a woman or a man. In a woman, infertility can be due to one or a combination of several factors. These include age, ovulation problems, the presence of fibroids or polyps in the uterus, fallopian tube diseases or pelvic adhesions. Exposure to radiation, certain chemicals and also smoking can cause infertility in women too.

In men, infertility is a problem related to the quality of sperm or a problem present in the sperm tract from the testicles to the ejaculation phase. Testicular cancer, retrograde ejaculation, infection of the sperm tract, testicular trauma as a result of an injury and testosterone deficiency can all contribute to male infertility.

Fortunately, there are several types of infertility treatment available to help couples conceive. This includes processes like IVF, ovulation induction and artificial insemination.
