liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to break up and remove fat deposits from around the abdomen, thighs and buttocks. It is popular with both men and women and helps them to achieve a shapelier figure when exercise and diet fail to make an impact. Please note - liposuction is not a weight loss solution.

Patients who undergo liposuction are required to be under a general anaesthetic. The surgeon performing the liposuction will make an incision in the area to be operated on. A tube called a cannula, which is attached to a vacuum pump, is then inserted beneath the skin. The pump is turned on and the cannula moved vigorously around to dislodge and capture the excess fat. This procedure can take up to two hours to complete and an overnight stay in hospital is often required.

As with most surgical procedures a fair degree of swelling and bruising will be seen. This should go down after a few days. Painkillers will be administered to help manage soreness and discomfort. A full recovery is normally made within 10 days.

The effects of liposuction are long-lasting, although a healthy balanced diet and exercise regime are important factors in this respect.
