A medical secretary is an essential part of a medical establishment's workforce. They represent the 'human' face of a hospital or surgery as they are the first point of contact for patients, whether that contact is made by telephone or face-to-face. They also provide an essential interface between patient and doctor, helping the establishment to run smoothly.

Besides having this important interface role, a medical secretary's duties include providing clerical and administrative support to medical staff along with secretarial duties such as typing, transcribing from audio tapes, dealing with hospital or surgery correspondence and filing. It can be a very stressful job as there are a lot of duties to balance, as well as having the time to deal will ill, upset or angry patients and relatives.

Excellent communication skills, an even-tempered and solution oriented approach to situations, good organisational skills, the ability to manage time efficiently, and the ability to think on your feet are all attributes required of a medical secretary. A good understanding of medical terminology is also essential as is prior experience of secretarial duties. Typing at a speed of 60wpm is generally the minimum acceptable.
