minerals
Minerals are naturally occurring substances that are used by our body to perform specific 'house-keeping' tasks, such as maintaining bone strength and keeping our immune system strong. A range of minerals are needed, the levels of which must be constantly topped up every day. Our body generally takes sufficient minerals for the tasks at hand from the food we eat. However, if we do not eat a balanced diet, we may become deficient in one or more minerals.
The important minerals required by our body are: -
Calcium - Used for maintaining good bone condition as well as for keeping out teeth and nails strong. Dairy products are a good source of calcium.
Iron - An essential part of the oxygen transport system in our blood. A low (anaemic) level of iron in our blood restricts the amount of oxygen being carried to our organs, making us tire easily. Cereals, fish and red meat are a good source of iron.
Magnesium - Essential for new cell development and growth. Leafy vegetables are the best source of magnesium.
Zinc - Helps us grow and keeps our reproduction system healthy. Pulses, meat, fish and cereals provide us with zinc.
Selenium - Also promotes growth and provides protection for our immune system. Dairy products, meat and cereals are a good source of selenium.
Potassium, phosphorous, iodine and fluoride are the other essential minerals needed to maintain a healthy body. For more information please use the resources on our site.
