A job in nursing can be extremely rewarding. Helping others to recover from serious or even life-threatening illnesses and injury can provide a sense of job satisfaction that few other industries are able to offer. Demand for trainee and qualified nurses has never been so high. The NHS and hospitals in the private sector are always eager to hear from people who are interested in developing a career as a nurse.
To be successful as a nurse you need a good mix of personal and medical skills. On the personal skills side a genuine desire to help other people is essential. Many patients enter hospital with a great deal of trepidation. They are afraid of what might happen to them and how they will be treated. This is especially true of the elderly who sometimes feel that their problems are embarrassing and inconvenient for you to handle. A friendly empathetic approach will go a long way to help put these patients' minds at ease.
The medical skills required for a nursing job are gained through on the job training and vocational courses. Untrained entrants into nursing normally start out as 'A' Grade nurses or auxiliaries and develop their skills from there through intensive hands-on nursing in hospital wards.
