Physiotherapy - Physiotherapy Jobs - Physiotherapists
Physiotherapy is the practice of treating injury, illness or disease through physical means, such as massage, therapeutic exercise and electrophysical treatments. Practising physiotherapists are mainly concerned with treating musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. Their work can benefit all sections of society, right through from those who develop temporary sports injuries to people who are terminally ill.
Physiotherapy does not involve the use of drugs, instead a physiotherapist will determine the cause of the problem and apply methods best suited that promote rapid recovery with minimum distress to the patient. If the condition is a part of a more extensive problem, such as body deterioration in cancer sufferers, then the physiotherapist's aim will be to make the patient as comfortable as possible, rather than curing the disease.
Sufferers of health conditions such as joint and spinal injuries that have resulted from an accident, or people who have partially or fully lost use of a limb after a stroke all stand to benefit significantly from physiotherapy. Elderly people too, whose body movements have become restricted, can regain a degree of mobility through physiotherapy sessions.
Physiotherapy also extends deep into other parts of the health care system. Advice on how to prevent injury whilst exercising at a gym and developing relaxation and body awareness in the mentally ill are just some of the less well known areas that physiotherapists work in.
