Prescriptions - Prescription Drugs

Obtaining a prescription from your doctor or GP is vital if you need prescription drugs to manage an illness. Prescription drugs cannot be legally given to you without a prescription.

To obtain a prescription you must first visit your local surgery. The doctor will examine you and recommend a product or products to help manage or cure your health condition. An online doctor can perform a similar task to that of your GP and write a prescription for you, whilst hospital doctors can also issue you with a prescription.

The prescription must then be taken to a dispensing chemist or pharmacy. In the UK there are bricks & mortar pharmacies in almost every town and large village. There are also on-line pharmacies on the Internet authorised to dispense NHS and private prescriptions. If using an on-line pharmacy they will request that you send them your prescription, often by freepost.

In general, pharmacies charge a set fee to make up a prescription. There are several exemption categories though which you may be eligible for, in which case you do not have to pay for your prescription. For NHS prescriptions the most common exemption that people claim under is the NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate. This is a credit card sized plastic certificate which might be awarded to you if you claim family tax credit from the government.
