Rhinoplasty - Rhinoplasty Surgery - Nose Surgery
Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to alter and re-shape a patient's nose. Alterations to the bridge of the nose, the tip of the nose, the septum, and even changes to the width of the nostrils can be made with rhinoplasty surgery, creating a pleasing new nose profile.
Patients are put under a general anaesthetic for the procedure, which can take up to 3 hours to complete. The operation involves a surgeon making several small incisions in the nose area to be worked upon. Nose cartilage and bone is then reworked or removed to create the patient's new nose shape.
Once surgery is complete surgical packing will be placed in the nostrils to control bleeding, and a splint placed across the nostrils to hold the packing in place. This must stay in position for between 24 - 48 hours, and can be a little disconcerting when waking from the anaesthetic, as you will find that you are unable to breathe through your nose.
Swelling and bruising of the nose is likely in the days immediately following surgery. This will rapidly subside, although it will continue to feel delicate for up to another 7 - 10days. Importantly, sneezing and blowing vigorously through your nose should be avoided where possible for the first week as this could cause further bleeding.
