Sun care
It's nice to feel the warmth of the sun on our skin, but do you realise how dangerous over-exposure to the sun can be? Harmful UV rays in sunlight, and for that matter in sun bed tubes, can cause the DNA in our skin cells to mutate when we sunburn, opening the door to skin diseases like cancer, as well as accelerating the ageing process.
DNA is present in almost every cell in our body. It controls everything about us from the colour of our hair to the freckles on our skin. Each time we sunburn though our skin cell DNA reacts with the sun's UV rays, causing some cells to mutate. For isolated incidents of mild sunburn this is not too problematic, but for those who repeatedly burn or burn badly, DNA mutation of skin cells spells trouble.
High levels of mutated DNA increases the likelihood of a normal gene turning into a powerful cell growth promoter. Cell growth regulators could also be erased in the area of skin affected. When either of these two scenarios happen, cell growth becomes uncontrolled - the very definition of cancer.
Adequate sun care protection using sun lotions of at least SPF 15 should provide you with the necessary protection from harmful UV rays. If out in the sun for long periods of time then sun lotion should be reapplied every few hours.
