What to Expect From Laser Teeth Whitening Treatment

2aThere is nothing quite like a sparkling white smile. It can help you to feel more self-confident and to be sure that your smile will make a good impression on people. In order to improve their smile, many people consider laser teeth whitening treatment. However, a lot of people are unsure what to expect from the treatment. Unsure what it will entail, many find themselves reluctant to book a treatment even though they are keen to get a whiter, brighter smile.

How Does Laser Teeth Whitening Work?

woman smileLaser teeth whitening uses a powerful halogen or LED light, focussed intensely onto teeth that have been treated with whitening gel. Heat, light and oxygen all react with the gel and with the stains on the teeth. This causes them to oxidise and turn a whiter colour, which will make your teeth whiter and closer to their natural colour.

This process is safe and gentle yet effective. There are several variations of laser teeth whitening treatment, and some may cause temporary sensitivity which will usually last for just a few hours. The gentlest versions of the treatment, however, will usually not cause even this minor side effect.

What Will the Procedure be Like?

The procedure is simple and painless. A plastic cheek retractor will be inserted into your mouth to help expose your smile and protect your gums. After this, the teeth whitening gel will be applied. Once this is in place, you are ready for the halogen bulb to be turned on and your smile to be exposed to its whitening light. Exposure will last fifteen minutes at a time. This will be repeated between two and four times depending on how dramatic you want the results to be.

For the vast majority of people, the treatment is painless and comfortable. However, you may experience some mild tingling during the process. If your teeth were exposed for more than fifteen minutes at a time, this could potentially cause discomfort which is why treatment is broken up into fifteen minute exposures with a short break in between.

How Effective is the Treatment?

dental-5More than 95% of people who visit skin and cosmetic clinics experience whitening of the teeth as a result of laser treatment. However, the extent of the whitening will depend on what type of stains your teeth have and how discoloured they are. Severe discolouration may need repeat treatments before achieving the desired effect. However, on a standard teeth whitening shade guide most people can expect one treatment to lighten their teeth by between six and twelve shades.

How long the results last can vary significantly from person to person. In some cases, it can be up to three years before teeth return to the colour they had before the treatment. However, most people like to have a repeat treatment after three to six months to keep their teeth as white as possible.
