Across 15 European countries there has been a 20 percent decrease in breast cancer deaths. This decrease has occurred over the last 2 decades. Britain has a seen a third of these reductions that have occurred. However, the breast cancer mortality rate in eastern Europe has reached a level of catastrophic.
French researchers were reviewing the 30 countries, what they saw was that Britain and Iceland had the largest reduction in breast cancer deaths. Death from breast cancer in all 30 countries combined resulted in 24 per 10,000 deaths. Spain had the lowest numbers at 18.9. Britain had a rate of 41.6 in 10,000. This number has been reduced to 28.2 in 10,000. However, Britain still is behind both Germany and France.
Information from the World Health Organization, WHO, was used in the study. The data covered the death rate from cancer during the years of 1989 to 2006. This information was used along with data from each country. The International Agency for Research on Cancer is from Lyon, France and they determined that Britain's improvements in screening and care attributed to the cancer death rate decline.
Britain has always been considered the worst European country when it came to surviving breast cancer. However, it is predicted that within three years Britain should see a breast cancer survival rate that surpasses even France's rate. Currently, Sweden, Finland and France has seen a decrease of 11 percent, 12 percent and 16 percent decrease in breast cancer death, starting back in the 1980s. However, with the level of care and funding in these countries, the numbers are some disappointing.
A country like France has invested much time and effort into the care of cancer patients and there are four times more screening for breast cancer than there is in Britain. The problem in France may lay in the management of the cancer system in place.
However, other countries in Europe have catastrophic problems with death from breast cancer. Also, there may be recording problems with cancer records, which could lead to misleading information and numbers, in Britain and other countries as well.
