Ovarian Cancer Knowledge

There has been substantial information about breast cancer that has been thrust into the public in the past few years; however, the awareness about ovarian cancer is still growing its knowledge base. Ovarian cancer is a cancer that affects the ovaries, meaning that it affects the organs responsible for the secretion of hormones for women and ovulation. The symptoms for this type of cancer are subtle, non-specific, but still very dangerous.

Many cases begin with a slight gain in the abdomen. However, this usually gets mistaken as something that happens with age and ends up prolonging the diagnosis. Some other symptoms include pelvic and/or abdominal pain, having to frequently urinate, problems with eating or feeling full. These symptoms are usually due to causes that are not harmful, and due to this it is hard to really diagnose them as cancer-related. Therefore, causing the cancer to advance more before it is fully identified as the issue.

Doctors say that this form of cancer depends on the awareness society has because it progresses with subtle symptoms. Sometimes there are earlier symptoms involving some slight pain or discomfort, but there is usually no definite warning sign. Most lose their appetites and may also feel a mass in their abdomen, which is caused by an ovarian tumor. The tumor leads to accumulation of fluid, which is a reason for the abdomen to increase its girth, and it also depresses the appetite.

A small amount of ovarian cancer cases are caused by heredity, most are really just random. The real cause of ovarian cancer has not been found, but there are a few factors that have become associated with increasing the risk. Women who have birthed children, breastfed, underwent tubal ligation, or those that have taken contraceptives orally are more at risk.

Treatment is typically a combination of both chemotherapy and surgery. The tumors react very well to the chemotherapeutic drugs. Usually patients have to go through three cycles of chemotherapy and follow it by cytoreductive surgery and three more cycles of the chemotherapy. The best treatment of ovarian cancer in the early stages is surgical which is typically by an oncosurgeon. The goal here is to remove the entire parts that are diseased from the pelvis and abdomen.

Remember that an early diagnosis is important for a more successful treatment and cure. Go in for regular checkups with your gynecologist. Women have a higher risk for this cancer when it’s strong in their family history. If one has a proven inherited genetic mutation for this disease, a complete abdominal hysterectomy with the removal of both ovaries can be done to decrease the risk.
