The Prime Minister implored the Royal College of Nurses and unions like it to help modernise the NHS – perhaps with telehealth. The PM argued ‘it’s not that we can’t afford to modernise, it’s that we can’t afford not to’, for new methods of improving care– like the HomePod. It’s an iPad-like device patients can use to measure vital signs, answer questions about symptoms and send the results to a nurse – though they may be miles apart. It means carers can detect health problems before they demand hospital care, which keeps patients healthier and costs lower. Trials suggest the HomePod can reduce hospital admissions by over 90% , as well as length of in-patient stays and A&E attendances by over 80%. We estimate that saves £4,300 per user each year, or £100,000 a year for a primary care trust using ‘Pods with just 90 patients. A study in the US found telehealth saved £180,000 in just 6 months , while a UK project put their cost saving at nearly £800,000 a year . Jeremy Cummin, Executive Chairman of Telehealth Solutions explained, ‘telehealth can change everything about healthcare’ ‘Whenever patients need it, wherever they are, a clinician can provide care that saves lives’ ‘It isn’t the NHS that can’t afford to be without this technology – it’s the patients.’
