Liposuction Polpularity on the Rise

weight-loss-6Recent polls amongst plastic surgeons indicate a new trend in plastics- Liposuction. The process of liposuction is essentially one of inserting a tube (through incision) into one’s “problem areas” and vacuuming out the unwanted fat. A possible explanation for the increased popularity of this procedure may be its relative safety. Recent advances in technique have allowed for greater volumes of fat to be removed with less bleeding, and therefore less risk to the patient. Recovery time is usually quick, involving a stay of only one or two days in the hospital and a total healing time of 1-2 weeks. While the procedure does leave a scar, they are typically small and inconspicuous. Liposuction is also one of the more affordable cosmetic procedures available; prices start at around 2,000 pounds and go up depending upon the surgeon and the amount of work to be done.

Surprisingly, the best candidates for liposuction are those who are considered only slightly overweight. Also gaining momentum is the “Mummy Package,” typically some combination of tummy tuck, breast lift, and liposuction. For women seeking to return to their pre-baby bodies, these packages are a relatively affordable, quick means of returning to their normal sizes. Many plastic surgeons have also begun offering financing for their services, which may also contribute to the rise in the number of cosmetic procedures performed each year.

Cosmetic SurgeryIndeed, a study conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery found that liposuction’s popularity was second only to breast augmentation in women. When surgeries performed only on men were considered, liposuction was the clear front-runner. Non-surgical cosmetic procedures including Botox injections and laser hair removal were also high on the list for both men and women. Interestingly, plastic surgeries performed on women made up a whopping 92 percent of all plastic surgeries performed for the year studied.

While the United States of America (followed closely by Brazil and Spain)still leads in the number of plastic surgeries performed per year, other countries are experiencing a rise in the popularity of these procedures. One study suggested that 50 percent of Korean women had undergone plastic surgery. Per capita, South Korea accounts the most plastic surgery performed, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
