The usual first ‘tell-tale’ sign of early pregnancy is a late period. If your cycle is pretty regular, and you are late, you should probably take a pregnancy test – one that can be purchased from any pharmacy. These tests are really quite accurate. If the instructions are followed closely, the test will be incredibly accurate. As such, follow the instructions and take your time! If you do get a ‘negative’ result, and you’re late, simply wait a few more days and try again!

Other signs and symptoms of early pregnancy include:


  •  Spotting – This occurs when you may be experiencing implantation bleeding. This is when the fertilized egg attaches itself to the uterine wall and causes a little bloodshed – this is quite normal.
  • Fatigue – Are you suddenly exhausted? Is this a very recent change in your fatigue levels? During early pregnancy, hormones now rushing through your body will cause your body to feel exhausted.
  • Breast Tenderness – Are your breasts feeling heavy and tender? Are your areolas darkening and are your chest veins more visible? If so, this could be a sign of pregnancy. To help overcome this, why not invest in a well-fitting and supportive bra?
  • Nausea – This isn’t usually an early sign. However, some expectant mums-to-be can experience nausea earlier than the six week period, when it usually begins in pregnant women.
  • Increased Urination – Are you finding that you’re going to the loo more frequently? Regardless of the time of day, do you need the toilet more and more? If so, this might be an early sign of pregnancy. During the early period of pregnancy, the body flushes excess fluids which cause you to pass more water more often.
  • Backaches – Lower back pain is really common in pregnancy, from the first to the last period. The increase weight distorts your body’s centre of gravity and the supportive ligaments are loosened by the hormone’s effects. To help combat this why not take more relaxing baths that can help soothe your muscles. Similarly, why not partake in exercises such as swimming or yoga?


  • Food Cravings and Aversions – You love a Chicken Tikka Masala, however, you suddenly feel revolted at the very smell? This could be your body telling you that you’re pregnant – or that the curry is a bit off? In all seriousness, eat foods you didn’t like beforehand and avoiding foods you did, is your body telling you that it is changing.
  • Constipation and Bloating – The hormone increases slow down the digestive system and this causes bloating and constipation. A diet that is full of fruit and vegetables with plenty of fluids in collaboration with gentle exercise will help you maintain a healthy bowel.
  • Mood Swings – The hormones that are expelled during pregnancy cause mood swings. Encourage partners to read-up on the subject so they can be more supportive. Your mood, during pregnancy, will settle down during the second trimester.
  • Dizziness or Fainting – Low blood sugar or blood pressure can cause dizziness. Always ensure that you eat enough and are well hydrated to avoid fainting or dizziness during pregnancy. If you are still experiencing dizziness or fainting visit your GP for more advice.
